What are Volumetric Water Benefits?
Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting (VWBA) is a common, well-established approach that continues to evolve to meet thegrowing needs related to corporate water stewardship goals. Since its release in 2019 (Reig et al.), VWBA has been widely adopted and is considered a best practice resource that provides comparable, credible, and transparent methods for quantifying the volumetric benefits of water stewardship activities.
As the complexity and scale of shared water challenges intensify, there is increasing demand for expanded guidance with consistent, pragmatic, and science-based principles to guide companies in making credible VWB claims that support ambitious enterprise and value chain water goals. The principles and the steps outlined in VWBA 2.0 provide practitioners with guidance that increases the likelihood that VWBA outputs will generate sustainable, beneficial outcomes and impacts that complement sustainable business strategies and mitigate current and future water risks.
As described below, this tool is intended to streamline the VWBA 2.0 guidance to support efficient evaluation of the potential for a project to generate volumetric water benefits (VWBs) and, when applicable, to identify the most appropriate approach for quantifying those benefits.

How do I use this tool?
This tool is intended to support companies in evaluating projects to identify:
- Their eligibility for generating volumetric water benefits (VWBs) in alignment with industry-standard guidance as documented in VWBA 2.0.
- The appropriate method and indicator to quantify the volumetric water benefits for eligible projects.
